When I first came across the 3Doodler Start+ Essentials 3D Printing Pen Set, I was excited about the possibility of introducing my child to 3D printing in a safe and creative way. Designed specifically for kids aged 6-13, this little pen opens up a world of hands-on creation, allowing kids to bring their ideas to life in three-dimensional form. As a homeschooling mom always on the lookout for educational tools, this product felt like the perfect blend of fun and learning.

Introduction to the 3Doodler Start+ Essentials 3D Printing Pen Set

The 3Doodler Start+ Essentials is an entry-level 3D printing pen made for children, providing an easy, engaging introduction to the world of 3D design and creation. Unlike traditional 3D printers, which can be bulky and complex, this pen lets kids experience the joy of building something from scratch with just a few clicks.

Aimed at children in grades 1 through 8, the pen is incredibly user-friendly and helps foster creativity while providing a hands-on learning experience. Whether your child is into art, engineering, or just loves building things, the 3Doodler Start+ allows them to express their creativity in a whole new way.

Features and Safety of the 3Doodler Start+

As a parent, my first concern was safety, and the 3Doodler Start+ puts those worries at ease. One of the standout features of this pen is its child-safe design. There are no external hot parts, so you don’t have to worry about little fingers getting burned. The pen uses Eco-Plastic strands that melt at a low temperature, making it safe for kids to touch as they create their 3D designs.

Setting up the 3Doodler Start+ is also incredibly easy. The package comes with everything you need to get started: the 3Doodler Start+ Pen, a micro USB charge cord, 72 Eco-Plastic strands in various colors, and an Activity Guide with ideas and projects to help kids kickstart their creations.

Using the pen is as simple as plugging it in to charge, loading the plastic strand, and pressing a button. The pen extrudes the heated plastic, which cools almost instantly, allowing your child to “draw” in the air or on paper and create three-dimensional objects. It’s that easy!

Encouraging STEM Learning and Creativity

One of the things I love most about the 3Doodler Start+ is how it seamlessly integrates creativity with STEM learning. In homeschooling, we’re always looking for ways to make learning engaging, and this pen ticks all the boxes. It encourages kids to plan and problem-solve as they design their projects, which are key elements in science, technology, engineering, and math education.

Kids can experiment with different shapes and structures, which supports their spatial understanding and introduces basic engineering concepts. Whether it’s building a 3D model of a house, designing jewelry, or creating abstract art, the possibilities are endless, and every project helps them think more critically and creatively.

The included Activity Guide is great for providing inspiration, and after a few projects, your child can start coming up with their own ideas as they get more comfortable with the pen. Watching them plan, build, and troubleshoot along the way can be one of the most rewarding parts of using this product.

Pros and Cons of the 3Doodler Start+

Like any product, the 3Doodler Start+ has its pros and cons, but I’d say the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Pros:

  • Fun and Easy to Use: Children are up and running with it within minutes. The simplicity of the setup and operation makes it very user-friendly, even for younger kids.
  • Encourages Creativity: This pen really lets kids’ imaginations run wild. It’s perfect for art projects, model-building, and even teaching basic design and engineering principles.
  • Safe Design: No hot parts and the use of non-toxic Eco-Plastic make it a stress-free tool for kids to use independently.
  • Popular Gift: This 3D pen has gained a lot of popularity as a gift item. It’s a hit with kids who love hands-on projects, and parents appreciate its educational value.

Cons:

  • Durability Concerns: Some users have reported that the pen isn’t as durable as they’d hoped. While not too often, I’ve read that the plastic strands can sometimes jam, and the pen itself might wear down with heavy use.
  • Frustration for Younger Kids: Though designed for kids as young as 6, younger children may need some help, especially with more intricate designs. As with anything new, practice helps with using.

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

Overall, the 3Doodler Start+ Essentials 3D Printing Pen Set will be a fantastic addition to our homeschooling toolkit. It combines creativity, hands-on learning, and basic STEM principles in a way that keeps kids engaged and eager to explore. The child-safe design and ease of use make it perfect for beginners, and it’s been a hit in our household.

While there are some minor drawbacks, like potential durability concerns and the occasional frustration with more complex projects, I think these are outweighed by the fun and educational value the pen provides. If you’re looking for a creative, engaging gift or a new learning tool for your child, I’d definitely recommend the 3Doodler Start+. It’s not just a toy; it’s a gateway to innovation and imagination!

    • Hello!

Yes, the safety aspect for me was I think the biggest thing. My little one is only 5 and even if I am right there with him, I know that it is safe for me to not have to watch him like a hawk to make sure that he doesn’t get burned. I love also how it is so easy to use and literally their creativity is their limit, which if you know kids that is boundless.
